won’t let the city destroy our love

If there’s anyone who knows how to write a proper pop song, it’s Patrick Wolf. Over the past six months, the British musician has been quietly releasing tracks from his upcoming fifth full-length, Lupercalia, set to be released on June 20th. I fell for his genre-defying tunes back in 2007 with the release of The Magic Position and proceeded to work my way backwards through his discography from there. He lost me a bit with 2009’s The Bachelor, which was a dark, twisted affair that simply felt like it was trying too hard to be something it wasn’t.
These three new songs from Lupercalia, however, are giving me an entirely different impression — it’s shaping up to be a record that I can truly connect with. The strings featured on “Time of My Life” absolutely slay me, while the feel good vibes and very Clarence Clemons-esque saxophone of “The City” have me feeling totally ready for summer. The newest release, “House,” already has me singing along and replaying its stunning music video over and over. Can’t wait to hear the finished product.
