Music vs. Misery

"What came first — the music or the misery?"

let’s go walk in the rain, love. know our pleasures from pain.

I’ve been non-stop grooving to Shapeshifter, the third album from the criminally underrated Vancouver trio Young Galaxy, over the past week. After 2007’s self-titled debut (an Arts & Crafts release), and 2009’s year-end standout Invisible Republic, I had seriously high expectations for the follow-up — all of which have been met, exceeded, but also thrown for a thrilling loop by the group’s distinct change in style.

Always looking for ways to reinvent themselves, words can’t possibly describe how proud I am of the gradual transformation that Young Galaxy has made over the years. Having trialed with both shoegaze and straight-up rock and roll, the group have successfully moved onto some electro-pop experimentation. This is surely one of the most wicked records of 2011 so far, and it goes hand-in-hand with an entire discography that’s well-worth introducing to your collection. It should also be noted that Catherine McCandless has one of the coolest voices in music today. For reals.
