Music vs. Misery

"What came first — the music or the misery?"

There’s a spirit in Montana and in your chest, a soul.

Okay, who said that music videos were irrelevant? This five-minute video for Youth Lagoon’s track ”Montana” made me feel more emotions than any feature-length film I’ve seen all year. (Kudos to director Tyler T Williams, who also directed Craft Spells’ “After the Moment,” another personal favourite.) The song itself is also a real beauty. Like, I just listened to it ten times in a row… then discovered the video and watched it ten times too. It’s got one of those slow-buildings crescendos that immediately sucks you in and you can’t turn it off until you find out how it ends.

Youth Lagoon is the moniker of Trevor Powers, a 22 year-old guy from Boise, Idaho who just released his debut, The Year of Hibernation, which he recorded alone in his bedroom. I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but I’m connecting with his dreamy music on such a deep level. Read more about him here.

*Edit: All day I’ve been trying to figure out what Trevor’s voice reminds me of and I’ve finally got it — Page France.
